To enhance the assurance of conscious citation and standardized documentation of retracted papers in academic journals, this study conducts an in-depth investigation into the citation practices of retracted papers within the globally esteemed journal Nature. Leveraging the Web of Science database, a methodical approach was devised to identify retracted papers cited in Nature articles by scrutinizing the reference lists of the citing works. The study systematically gathered data on retracted papers, encompassing retraction indicators within the main text and references of citing papers, and organized retraction-related details of the cited retracted papers, such as retraction dates, download permissions, and retraction markers in the web version, PDF version, and citation metadata of the retracted papers. The results reveal that 21 Nature articles have cited 21 retracted papers published from 2007 to 2024, with a noticeable increase in citations over the past five years. Approximately one-third of these cited retracted papers were self-citations by Nature. Alarmingly, 61.9% of the citing papers neglected to acknowledge the retraction status, treating retracted papers as if they were regular publications. Furthermore, Nature lacks a consistent recording format for retracted papers and has not granted download permissions for them. Additionally, retracted papers in Nature frequently lack appropriate retraction markers in their web and PDF versions, as well as in citation metadata. In light of the escalating number of retracted papers and challenges such as unaware citations and non-standardized recording, the study proposes that academic journals incorporate retracted paper reviews into their routine management. It also recommends utilizing tools like Edifix, ReCheck, and Shanfeng Software to efficiently process reference lists in batches, detect retracted papers, and select appropriate formats for standardized recording of retracted papers tailored to the journal’s specific needs.
