| Peer review in academic journals plays a decisive role in the publication of scholarly papers. Team member substitution in peer review, as a form of “shadow review”, is defined as academic misconduct. However, due to its covert nature and widespread practice, it persists despite prohibitions and continues to operate in the gray area of the review process. To some extent, it even helps maintain the normal operation of journals, which inspires us to standardize and improve this reviewing practice. Through a multidimensional comparison of substitution, team review, and collaborative review, by drawing on international practices, we argue that granting legitimate status to substitute reviewers within teams and transforming team member substitution into collaborative team review can effectively address this issue. On the basis of strengthening training and confidentiality awareness for collaborative reviewers, academic misconduct in the review process can be eliminated through supervision and accountability mechanisms. Meanwhile, evaluation and incentive mechanisms can enable outstanding team members to become independent reviewers. Through effective editor-author interactions, a platform for growth can be established for collaborative team reviewers, facilitating their transition from author-reviewers to core authors-excellent reviewers. This achieves a win-win outcome:fostering their career development and promoting the high-quality growth of academic journals. |
