To address the challenges regarding topic selection and methodological limitations faced by early-career editors of Chinese scientific and technical journals when conducting editology research, this study aims to provide actionable strategies by analyzing the research paradigms of top-tier international journals. Using content analysis, this study systematically reviewed 855 research articles published between 1996 and 2025 in Learned Publishing, an authoritative journal in the field of international academic publishing. The study focused on mining empirical research cases grounded in actual editorial and publishing practices. Frontier research in international editology demonstrates a significant trend toward "micro-level analysis" and "evidence-based approaches." For topic selection, early-career editors can cut into research from micro-perspectives such as peer review process optimization, author behavior analysis, and the efficacy of new technology applications. In terms of methodology, there should be a transition from qualitative experience summarization to empirical methods, including internal data mining, textual content analysis, and controlled experiments. Early-career editors should base their research on their professional roles and cultivate an "evidence-based publishing" mindset. By transforming daily operational data into academic research resources, they can achieve professional advancement from "craftsman editors" to "scholar editors," thereby contributing to the high-quality development of Chinese scientific and technical journals.
